While Point Reyes National Seashore staff has approved a plan to allow the ranching industry to remain in business at the seashore for two more decades, staff at the California Coastal Commission is concerned that the plan fails to adequately protect marine resources.

In a decision that could lead to litigation, the National Park Service is moving to preserve the ranching industry at Point Reyes National Seashore in California for two more decades. While the hefty decision document also calls for maintaining the seashore's free-ranging Tule elk herds, it also allows for the killing of elk near livestock operations.

Rocky Mountain, Sequoia, Saguaro, Yellowstone and Yosemite national parks all were dealing with wildfires Monday, as was Point Reyes National Seashore, though a potent cold front sweeping down from Canada could bring some relief for firefighters in Rocky Mountain and Yellowstone.

Concern Growing Over Health Of Tule Elk At Point Reyes National Seashore

Concerns that Tule elk at Point Reyes National Seashore don't have enough water for survival prompted a letter Monday to the seashore's acting superintendent, the National Park Service's acting director, and Interior Secretary David Bernhardt asking that they ensure the elk don't die from thirst.
