Science Behind The Scenery Presentation: Post-Fire Vegetation Response At Chickaree Lake

Rocky Mountain National Park invites visitors to a special program at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 22, at the Beaver Meadows Visitor Center. Participants will join recent Kansas State University graduate Barrie Chileen as she shares her research on vegetation response to wildfires over the past 2,500 years at Chickaree Lake on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park.

Avalanches In Rocky Mountain National Park

Human-triggered avalanches rocked steep terrain in Rocky Mountain National Park over the weekend. These avalanches serve as a good reminder that although the avalanche danger rating is “moderate,” heightened avalanche conditions can still exist on specific terrain features. Snowfall prior to the weekend, wind slab formation, and warming temps increased the potential for avalanche activity.

Rocky Mountain Winter...In May

The snow-heavy winter of 2018-19 left quite a bit of snow in the Rocky Mountains. At Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado, road crews were working in May to bust through the drifts that buried Trail Ridge Road. This image from the road above Many Parks Curve was taken May 10, 2019.

Slow Going To Open Trail Ridge Road In Rocky Mountain National Park

Today would be a good day to start a pool on when Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park will be fully open. It certainly won't be this week.

More Prescribed Burns Planned At Rocky Mountain National Park

Fire managers from Rocky Mountain National Park are preparing to conduct prescribed burns in the Beaver Meadows entrance area. Burning will only occur if favorable weather and fuel conditions permit. A 36 acre section of this area was burned this past October.

UPDATED | National Park System Visitation Dropped 13 Million In 2018, To 318.2 Million

Volcanics, no solar eclipse, and wildfires no doubt all played a role in the decline of visitation to the National Park System in 2018, when slightly more than 318 million visits were recorded, a drop of 13 million from the year before.
