Summer in the Sonoran Desert is HOT — as daytime temperatures regularly exceed 100 degrees from May through September — but visitors still have a lot to enjoy at Saguaro National Park, just outside Tucson, Arizona. Desert hiking in extreme heat can be hazardous, but savvy visitors know they can hike early, pace themselves, rest often, and drink at least one gallon of water per person per day — while using sunscreen and wearing a hat with a full brim.

Warm weather likely played a role in two more deaths in the National Park System, as there was a drowning Saturday at Great Smoky Mountains National Park and a possible heat-related death at Saguaro National Park.

In an age of digital overload, polarized politics, and the overwhelming rush of modern life, there’s a place you can go to recharge, rejuvenate, reconnect, and embrace a more simple time. There’s a dude ranch waiting for you out there, and more than likely it’s close to a national park if you want the best of both worlds (ranch and park worlds, that is).

You can add Isle Royale National Park, Saguaro National Park, and Devils Tower National Monument to the units of the National Park System that will have higher entrance fees in the coming months.
