Visitor centers at the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site and Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail will expand their hours to six days a week beginning January 29.
Changes in visitor desires and habits, technology, and even interpretation are driving efforts to redefine the national park visitor center for the 21st century.
"Established by Congress in 1996, the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail commemorates the people, events, and route of the 1965 Voting Rights March in Alabama. Led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Black and White non-violent supporters fought for the right to vote in Central Alabama. Today, you can connect with this history and trace the events of these marches along the 54-mile trail."
A new booklet provides a nice overview of the events leading up to, and including, the calamitous march for civil rights in Alabama in 1965 that propelled the issue of segregation and voting rights for all Americans onto the national stage.
Closed campgrounds, Sunday closures of National Park System units, and 900 permanent positions that will go unfilled are just some of the latest details of how the National Park Service is responding to the ongoing federal budget sequestration.
