Long, Slow Recovery Predicted For Some National Parks In Caribbean

Damage inflicted by the one-two punch of Hurricanes Irma and Maria could keep Virgin Islands National Park virtually closed for six months to a year, according to the National Park Service's Caribbean superintendent. When the five other parks in the Caribbean reopen depends largely on when the islands' power grids are restored and fuel becomes available, he added.

Dry Tortugas National Park Opening Monday, Still No Information On Caribbean Parks

Dry Tortugas National Park was scheduled to reopen Monday in the aftermath of two hurricanes this month, though the National Park Service still was not releasing information on the fate of national park units in the Caribbean or their employees.

No Details On Fate Of National Parks In The Caribbean

While work continued to progress Saturday on clearing away the mess that Hurricane Irma made of National Park System units in Florida and Georgia, there were no details on the fate of National Park Service employees and facilities in the Caribbean that were pummeled by Irma and then Hurricane Maria.

St. John Islanders Preparing For Hurricane Maria's Arrival

With Hurricane Maria, which has blossomed into a Category 5 storm with winds gusting above 160 mph, hours away from a direct hit on St. John in the U.S. Virgin Island, islanders were doing the best they could to prepare for the wind and rain.

Myriad Problems Confronting National Park Service Crews In Aftermath Of Hurricane Irma

Leaking water mains, power outages, a collapsed 40-foot section of the moat wall surrounding historic Fort Jefferson at Dry Tortugas National Park, and a debris-filled waterfront at Cumberland Island National Seashore were just some of the problems National Park Service crews were dealing with Saturday as they worked to clean up the aftermath of Hurricane Irma.
