Efforts by the Trump administration to weaken hunting and trapping restrictions on national park lands in Alaska were challenged Wednesday by a coalition of conservation and environmental groups that argued the rule change violated the National Park Service Organic Act and was arbitrary and capricious.

Trump Administration Forces National Park Service To Weaken Its Hunting Regulations In Alaska

In a move critics say runs contrary to the National Park Service's mission to manage for naturally-functioning ecosystems and processes, the agency in Alaska is relaxing its hunting and trapping prohibitions in national preserves so they'll align with the state's regulations.

"It Looked Like Molten Lava. Except It Was Molten Ice."

"My first impression was that it looked like molten lava. Except it was molten ice. It had that same kind if pyroclastic flow to it," recalled Peter Christian of the day back in 2016 when he flew over a remote corner of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve and saw a slurry of ice coursing rapidly downhill through a barren drainage.

A multi-year interagency investigation has resulted in the conviction and sentencing of three men who violated the Lacey Act and other federal laws. During a recent court hearing, Casey Richardson, Jeffrey Harris, and Dale Lackner were each sentenced to serve five years of probation, ordered to pay thousands of dollars in restitution, and ordered to perform community service for hunting-related violations involving Dall sheep and brown bears in the park.
