Sequoias can grow for millennia, reaching heights of nearly 300 feet. More than 150 years ago, they helped inspire the Yosemite Grant Act, which set aside the grove as one of the nation’s first protected landscapes.

Fires from Wyoming to Hawaii continue to rage in the National Park System, with thousands of firefighters battling flames that are sending billowing, choking clouds of smoke into some parks and limiting access in others. The Yosemite Valley, Wawona area, and Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias all remained closed in Yosemite National Park on Thursday.

Residents, Employees Told To Evacuate Yosemite Valley Due To Firefighting Efforts

One of the most iconic vistas in the National Park System, the Yosemite Valley, was ordered evacuated Friday due to firefighting efforts related to the Ferguson Fire outside the park's borders. The valley itself was not threatened by the fire "at this time," Yosemite National Park staff said.
