The idea that we need to log the forest to create healthy forests in a national park is a major threat to the management policies of the National Park Service, which generally promotes natural ecological and evolutionary processes.

At the end of their very long days on the fire lines battling the Washburn Fire at Yosemite National Park, firefighters retreat to the fire camp where they can eat, sometimes shower, and rest for the next day. Understandably, with more than 1,000 firefighters at work, these camps can generate a great deal of waste. And that's where a recycling program undertaken by the U.S. Forest Service is making a big impact.

Yosemite National Park's famous Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias was threatened Saturday by a growing wildfire that led to the evacuation of not just the grove but the nearby Wawona area. While more than 200 firefighters were trying to tackle the 703-acre Washburn fire, weather conditions were not helpful, as the forecast called for growing temperatures and reduced humidity through the weekend.
