This 10x10-inch book is a showcase for the photography of Montana native Christopher Cauble. In its 120 pages, you’ll get a glimpse into the scenery, wildlife, and unique features of our first national park.
Produced by Riverbend Publishing, Yellowstone: A Land of Wild and Wonder is laid out in a high-key design, with a lot of white space around the one-per-page photos, many of them from the lesser-seen winter season. It’s a contemporary presentation, though overall reproductions may fall more into the cool-blue range and some muted colors.
Cauble, in his unique style, covers all of the megafauna and smaller creatures, including bears, antelope, elk, and bighorns. While some of his vistas fall a bit flat and traditional, his animal portraits and especially his image abstracts of hot springs are lovely and intriguing. A couple of photos, to me, stood out, including snow settling on to a bull elk’s antlers, and a simple triangular aspen grove in deep snow. His portrait of a gray jay is wonderful. And when humans are shown, they are dwarfed by the landscape, or merely implied by empty boardwalks.
The book would make a good holiday gift, or to add to your growing collection of the hundreds of books that still haven’t told the whole story of this magnificent plateau.
