2nd Annual Threatened And Endangered Parks: Historic Sites In Virginia And Mississippi

If plans had proceeded as energy company Cricket Solar had hoped, more than 380,000 solar panels would have been installed in Culpeper County, Virginia—a utility-scale array in the heart of some of the state’s most historic land. Both Union and Confederate armies occupied and fought over the county during the Civil War, and it was a major staging area for the Manassas and Gettysburg campaigns. The scale of the plans led to an outcry from citizens and concerned parties, including filmmaker and Virginia resident Ron Maxwell, director of the 1993 film Gettysburg.

National Park Service Awards $439,725 To Protect 50 Acres At Cold Harbor Battlefield

A grant of $439,725 grant from the National Park Service's American Battlefield Protection Program will help protect 50 acres of Cold Harbor Battlefield in Hanover County, Virginia, a significant Civil War battlefield threatened with damage or destruction by suburban development. The grant will be used to acquire a portion of the battlefield, and the property will be protected in perpetuity with a conservation easement held by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.

Civil War History Comes Alive At Cold Harbor

During a two-week period back in the spring of 1864, Confederate and Union forces engaged in one of the largest battles of the Civil War just 10 miles outside of Richmond, Virginia at a rural crossroads known as Cold Harbor. On Saturday, June 3 and Sunday, June 4, Richmond National Battlefield Park invites the public to experience the story of that epic battle that resulted in more than 18,000 casualties and led one Confederate general to lament, “It was not war; it was murder.”
