U.S. Forest Service, Fish And Wildlife Service Sued Over Livestock Trespass At Valles Caldera National Preserve

A lawsuit has been filed against the U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service over cattle that leave forest lands to enter Valles Caldera National Preserve in northern New Mexico. Brought by three environmental groups, the lawsuit alleges the agencies violated the Endangered Species Act by allowing livestock to illegally graze in the preserve.

Valles Caldera National Preserve Seeking Cattle Wrangler

The National Park Service is seeking, horse-mounted, trespass cattle wrangling services at Valles Caldera National Preserve in New Mexico during the 2024 summer and fall seasons. This is one of the efforts the park is pursuing to reduce impacts to park resources from cattle trespassing from adjacent U.S. Forest Service grazing allotments.

The National Park Service has been sued over Director Chuck Sams' decision to allow the Jemez Pueblo to kill an eagle in Valles Caldera National Preserve by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, which is asking to see the decision documents Sams relied on to authorize the taking.
