Cedar Breaks National Monument Officials Will Be Showing Off Their Yurt This Saturday

Cedar Breaks National Monument officials will be showing off their yurt this weekend to get the public accustomed to relying on it for winter recreation information.

“The purpose of the open house event is to raise the profile of The Yurt and its function as a winter ranger station,” said Paul Roelandt, the monument's superintendent. “Our winter recreation use is increasing; many people are discovering the winter beauty of our park.”

To reacquaint the public with The Yurt, the open house will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Saturday as long as the weather cooperates. Volunteers and park rangers will be on hand to welcome snowshoers, cross country skiers, and snowmobilers and provide information about winter recreation opportunities.

Hot chocolate, light refreshments, and a warm stove will be available.

To reach The Yurt, drive approximately three miles south of Brian Head on Highway 143. A plowed parking lot is maintained at the junction of Highways 143 and 148. Parking is limited and may not be available during and immediately after snowstorms. The Yurt is located about one mile south on the groomed snowmobile trail.

“With other area winter activities going on and a good weather forecast, there could be a number of people enjoying the park this weekend," said Chief Ranger Matthew Harrison. “Snowmobilers, cross-country skiers, and snowshoers should all be aware of each other and observe trail etiquette so that everyone can have a safe and enjoyable experience. It should be a great weekend to explore the park.”
