Looking to save a few bucks? Purchase a Traveler membership and you'll save on river trips, books, lodging, and now on a map to Zion National Park and national park posters. The memberships, at $9.95 for a year, help you save some money, and help you contribute to the upkeep of the Traveler

New to the members' discount store are Day Hikes of Zion National Park, and original national park posters by Rob Decker, a Colorado-based photographer and graphic artist who has been traveling the park system to create posters similar to those created in the 1930s by the Works Progress Administration.

Mr. Decker's professional training started when he was 19, having the rare opportunity to study under Ansel Adams in Yosemite National Park during the summer of 1979. That experience solidified both his love of photography and the national parks, and he has been fortunate to visit -- and photograph -- more than half of them during the past 35 years.

After creating a series of posters for his daughter'™s wedding using scenic locations around Colorado, he perfected a process that starts with original photography and finishes with a style reminiscent of the WPA posters. Now his goal is to create WPA-style posters for each of the 59 national parks before the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service in August 2016.

Since the launch of The National Park Poster Project in 2014 and the release of the first 12 posters, Mr. Decker has visited, photographed, and started work on new posters for Everglades, Biscayne and Dry Tortugas, as well as Saguaro, Petrified Forest and Grand Canyon national parks. On the horizon: Zion, Bryce, Capitol Reef and Canyonlands, and he plans to release these, and several others, this summer.

'œBy creating iconic national park images, I hope to generate awareness, not only of the grandeur of these amazing places, but also for their continued protection and operation. Everyone '” today and in the future '” should have a chance to enjoy the often fascinating and always awe-inspiring beauty of our national parks," he said.

Day Hikes Of Zion National Park folds into a nice, waterproof, portable guide to Zion's day hikes/hike734

Day Hikes of Zion was created by Jake Bramante, the guy who hiked all 734 miles of Glacier National Park in one year. The fold-out guide provides details on 29 hikes in the park and is printed on tear-resistant, waterproof paper that folds down to a roughly 4.5-inch by 9-inch brochure that you can stuff in your back pocket or day pack. Unfold it and you find a map of the park with key facilities (restrooms, visitor center, lodging, picnic areas, etc) marked along with numbered hikes. Shuttle bus stops in the park as well as neighboring Springdale also are numbered to help you catch a ride.

This map is similar to Bramante's Day Hikes Of Glacier National Park. Hikes in the Zion guide are color-coded by region in the park. So if you look at all the purple-coded hikes, you'll know they're in the same general area of the park; in this case, in Zion Canyon. Green circles denote trails on the West Rim, violet is tagged to those on North Creek, yellow indicates southwest desert, light blue is The Narrows, and red is Kolob Canyons and the East Rim. Lines denoting the trails are even color coded: green for easy, yellow for moderate, and red for strenuous.

Traveler members can save 20 percent on Mr. Decker's posters, currently starting at $25 each, and 15 percent on Day Hikes of Zion, which retails for $9.95.

Support National Parks Traveler

Your support for the National Parks Traveler comes at a time when news organizations are finding it hard, if not impossible, to stay in business. Traveler's work is vital. For nearly two decades we've provided essential coverage of national parks and protected areas. With the Trump administration’s determination to downsize the federal government, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s approach to public lands focused on energy exploration, it’s clear the Traveler will have much to cover in the months and years ahead. We know of no other news organization that provides such broad coverage of national parks and protected areas on a daily basis. Your support is greatly appreciated.
