While the Paradise Fire at Olympic National Park in Washington has been growing slowly and not been a great concern, recent growth has prompted the need for additional trail closures in the park.
An overflight on Monday revealed that a narrow finger of the fire had reached Bob Creek, the landmark that has served as the temporary closure point for the Queets River Trail since the fire was discovered in June.
Olympic National Park officials have therefore expanded the trail closure to include all areas east of Spruce Bottom on the Queets River Trail. The trail is now closed at Spruce Bottom until further notice to protect public and employee safety. All other park trails remain open.
The fire is in a remote area deep within the park boundary and wilderness of Olympic National Park. It is burning in an area of huge, centuries old trees and extremely steep terrain, making traditional ground firefighting tactics extremely challenging or impossible. Firefighters are using a variety of tactics to confine and contain the fire.
