Heavy rains this week washed out a section of the Olympic Hot Springs Road/NPS
Heavy rains this week have left their mark on Olympic National Park in Washington state, tearing up roads, damaging campgrounds, and generally making a mess of things.
According to park staff, in the Elwha Valley, recent repairs to the Olympic Hot Springs Road and Whiskey Bend Road appear to have survived the storm intact, but other areas in the valley have seen damage extensive damage. The Olympic Hot Springs Road did suffer a washout just north of the Elwha Campground. There was also heavy damage to the Elwha Campground, and to the Altair Campground further upstream, according to a park release. Condition assessments continue in the Elwha and elsewhere throughout the park.
The North Shore Quinault Road and Graves Creek Road were both damaged by washouts and remain closed. The Sol Duc Road and Hurricane Ridge Road are closed this weekend due to snow, as road crew staff attend to storm impacts around the rest of the park.
Weather permitting, the Hurricane Ridge Road is scheduled to be open this coming holiday weekend. The Kalaloch, Mora, Ozette, Hoh, Lake Crescent and Staircase areas are open.
