Despite being one of the snowiest winters in recent years, someone headed into Crater Lake National Park in Oregon and broke into a locked building to steal thousands of rounds of ammunition, according to the National Park Service.
Special agents with the Park Service's Investigative Services Branch said the rounds of rifle and pistol caliber ammunition were taken from the building that is in the headquarters area of the park.
"The ammunition is part of the park’s law enforcement program; its theft is a felony," the release said.
Investigators are offering up to $1,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of those responsible. You can reach investigators via:

Just curious: Why is a National Park storing 1000s of rounds of ammunition in the first place? Dozens, scores, maybe hundreds I can see, but are these places now armories as well?
Seems like ten or so law enforcement rangers, each using multiple types of firearms, might go through a thousand rounds in one training or recertification session?
I would expect any small police department to have a similar store in their armory. I would also suspect that this ammuniton is an item which is bought in case lots, probably ordered annually.
UGLY FACE of NPS SKULDUGGERY
The Crater Lake NP Structure shown is where some Fire and Natural Resources Offices are located; fire engines are generally parked in lower bays, at ground level. Another similar but smaller two-level Historic Structure used to be situated to the left space in this photo; it was foolishly destroyed by incompetent management during the 1960's period.
The skulduggery inherent within the NPS Culture tolerates this reported thievery; other similar stories of "Insider Thievery" abound within Crater Lake personnel history as well as in other parks such as Redwood NP where local Orick Timber oriented employees were employed despite their unofficial histories of thievery. Given the serious lack of truly professional Leadership within Crater Lake NP Management Divisions, we can only wonder or speculate about other cases of illegal behavior tolerated by an Leaderless NPS Management often chilled by winter's cold.
Would be nice, though, if the NPS would offer us some simple explanation to defuse the anxiety of the headline.
When a building like this is locked up for the winter and not guarded 24/7 all valuables "especially ammo" should have been removed. Not to smart!
"The skulduggery inherent within the NPS Culture tolerates this reported thievery..."
I thought with the failure of Jade Helm that the black helicopters who bring in the skullduggery were grounded.
