A soon-to-be available app for your smartphone is intended to make it easier, and quicker, for you to get into Joshua Tree National Park to see Skull Rock/Kurt Repanshek file photo

Joshua Tree National Park is making it easier and faster to get into the California park. You soon will be able to use a free mobile app to prepay entrance fees.

The app, scheduled to be released April 17, will be available on Android and iPhone stores by searching “JTNP Fee Pay: Park Pass.” Visitors can use debit and credit cards, PayPal, and other major digital wallet systems.

The purchaser will receive a specific digital pass, which is shown at park entrance stations. Passes that can be purchased online include the 7-day vehicle pass ($25), the 7-day motorcycle pass for motorcyclists, bicycle or pedestrian access ($12), and the Joshua Tree National Park annual pass ($40). Be prepared to show a photo ID, as passes are non-transferable.

The new app is designed to streamline the park fee purchase process and reduce time getting into the park. Joshua Tree National Park is one of only two national parks included in the pilot program, and the National Park Service is looking to offer the service at other parks.
