Snowshoe tours will be led at Jewel Cave National Monument this winter when conditions allow/NPS

Cave tours at Jewel Cave National Monument will be closed this winter to allow some construction work, but rangers will be on hand to lead snowshoe tours on the surface when conditions allow.

Through February the monument found in the Black Hills of South Dakota will be open on Wednesdays through Sundays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The monument also will be closed on federal holidays from late December through February: Christmas Day, New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and President’s Day.

The cave tour route is currently under construction and is closed through mid- to late April 2019.  However, the visitor center and surface trails are available for public use throughout the winter and early spring seasons.

Monthly guided snowshoe hikes are planned for the winter season. On Saturdays, January 12 and 26 and February 9 and 23, park staff will lead tours on the quarter-mile Roof Trail.  Each date will have hikes at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.  Participants are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather conditions and wear sturdy boots. If snow is not available, a dry hike will take place.  All hike events will start at the visitor center.

Severe winter weather may affect park operations on occasion. Follow the monument through social media at www.facebook.com/JewelCaveNPS or www.instagram.com/jewelcavenps for up-to-date information on weather-related delays or closures.
