Ground searchers went through the Boulder Brook drainage looking for Micah Tice at Rocky Mountain National Park/NPS
Efforts to find a hiker reported missing a week ago continue to prove fruitless for search-and-rescue teams at Rocky Mountain National Park, and the onset of wintry weather likely has turned the search into a recovery, not rescue, mission.
Since the search for Micah Tice, 20, began, roughly 10 square miles in the Longs Peak area of the park have been explored. Crews have been focused in the Boulder Brook drainage and Storm Pass area. On Saturday, two Colorado National Guard helicopters from Buckley Air Force Base assisted with aerial reconnaissance. However, cloud cover on Longs Peak has impacted visibility from the helicopters, and the pilots also have had to deal with strong, gusting winds.
Last Thursday park staff received information from visitors who were in the Longs Peak area on Saturday, November 24. They spoke and hiked with Tice for approximately 20 minutes. They reported that he was wearing a black sweatshirt, black sweatpants, a black hat, black lightweight gloves, tennis shoes, and a light blue backpack. Tice told them he had started from the Longs Peak Trailhead at 6:30 a.m. They last saw Micah in the vicinity of the Battle Mountain area, between 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. on Saturday, November 24, as visibility and weather conditions continued to deteriorate.
It was on Monday, November 26, that Rocky Mountain National Park rangers were notified that the U.S. Air Force Academy was asking for assistance in locating a Tice, a cadet candidate from Las Vegas, Nevada, who hadn't been heard from since late Friday, Noember 23.
Weather for Longs Peak on this past weekend included blizzard conditions, extremely high winds, bitter cold temperatures and snow accumulation.
