Hurricane Lee was lined up to brush coastal New England/National Hurricane Center

With Hurricane Lee's track becoming more defined for the coming days, more facilities at Acadia National Park in Maine and Cape Cod National Seashore in Massachusetts were closing in advance of the storm.

The National Hurricane Center on Friday issued a tropical storm warning for coastal Maine.

"On the forecast track, the center of Lee will continue to move farther away from Bermuda and approach the coast of New England and Atlantic Canada through Saturday," the center's forecast said. "Lee is then expected to turn toward the north-northeast and northeast and move across Atlantic Canada Saturday night and Sunday."

As of midday Friday, all of Acadia's campgrounds were closed; the Cadillac Summit Road was to close to vehicles at 10 p.m. Friday through noon on Sunday; at 7 p.m. Friday, the one-way section of Park Loop Road will be closed to motor vehicles until further notice; at 5 p.m. Friday, the one-way section of the Schoodic Loop Road starting at Frazer Point will be closed to motor vehicles until further notice; service of the Island Explorer shuttle bus was expected to be disrupted Friday and suspended Saturday; and the Jordan Pond House Restaurant, Wildwood Stables, Sieur de Monts Nature Center, Wild Gardens of Acadia, Thompson Island Information Center, and Islesford Historical Museum all were to be closed Saturday.

If you want a refund for your Cadillac Summit Road reservation, go to Fees & Cancellations for Cadillac Summit Road Vehicle Reservations on Recreation.gov.

At Cape Cod National Seashore, where the cape also was under a tropical storm warning, the National Park Service said the following facilities, routes, and activities had been canceled or closed due to the hurricane:

  • All park fee booths and the Oversand Permit Office will be closed on Saturday.
  • The Oversand Route was to be closed Friday at noon.
  • The Marconi Beach stairs, walkways to Nauset Light Beach and Head of the Meadow Beach were to close at noon Friday.
  • Other beach access points or areas of the park may be closed at any time due to hazardous conditions.
  • The Dark Sky Festival, scheduled for Friday and Saturday, was cancelled, including the "Star Party" planned for Friday evening.
  • All outdoor ranger programs scheduled for Saturday have been cancelled, though indoor programs will still take place.
  • All beach fire permits for Saturday have been cancelled.

Elsewhere along the Northeast coast:

  • Longfellow House-Washington's Headquarters National Historic Site was to be closed on Saturday.
  • The visitor center at New Bedford Whaling National Historical Site was to be closed Saturday, and maybe Sunday.
  • The Public Stores, Derby House, and Derby Wharf at Salem Maritime National Historic Site were to be closed Saturday.

Support National Parks Traveler

Your support for the National Parks Traveler comes at a time when news organizations are finding it hard, if not impossible, to stay in business. Traveler's work is vital. For nearly two decades we've provided essential coverage of national parks and protected areas. With the Trump administration’s determination to downsize the federal government, and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum’s approach to public lands focused on energy exploration, it’s clear the Traveler will have much to cover in the months and years ahead. We know of no other news organization that provides such broad coverage of national parks and protected areas on a daily basis. Your support is greatly appreciated.
