
A man who tried to BASE jump from Yavapai Point died in the attempt/NPS file of Yavapai Point
A man who tried to BASE jump from the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park fell hundreds of feet to his death in the attempt.
A park release said visitors reported the man leaping from Yavapai Point on Thursday morning around 7:30 a.m.
"Rangers responded and located the body of a deceased male approximately 500 feet below the rim, along with a deployed parachute," the release said. "Recovery teams were able to reach the victim [Friday] morning. The body was transported to the rim by helicopter and subsequently transferred to the Coconino County [Arizona] Medical Examiner's Office."
BASE jumping is illegal throughout Grand Canyon National Park.

While I had heard of BASE, I didn't know what it meant. For the benefit of other ignorant and curious people, Wikipedia says the following.
"BASE" is an acronym that stands for four categories of fixed objects from which one can jump: buildings, antennas (referring to radio masts), spans (bridges), and earth (cliffs).
