It could be at least 2028 before boat tours of Crater Lake resume/Rebecca Latson file
A number of repair projects will require Cleetwood Cove at Crater Lake National Park to be closed for two or more years, meaning there will be no boat tours of the lake during that period.
The work, which actually was announced early in 2022, involves improving the 1.1-mile-long Cleetwood Trail and rebuilding the marina where the tour boats dock. The marina bulkhead and dock system failed in 2016 due to unstable slopes at the marina, rockfall damage, and high energy waves, according to the park.
Four major projects are scheduled for this popular area of Crater Lake:
- Rockfall scaling and mitigation
- Rehabilitation of the trail
- Removal and replacement of the failed bulkhead/dock with a structurally stable marina
- Replacing the outdated and undersized composting toilets.
It had been thought that construction would have started last year. However, a contract has yet to be awarded, though that's expected to take place this year, with construction beginning in 2026. It could take two years to finish the work, due to the short construction season at Crater Lake.
