Did you watch all 15 hours of the Ken Burns mega-series "The War" which wrapped up last night on PBS? I did! Having watched the series, I have wondered, what are the World War II sites managed by the National Park Service? I've come up with this list, with some parks units that you might not expect.

Non-native species that arrive in the Great Lakes via ballast waters are a substantial threat to the native fisheries in the lakes. At Isle Royale National Park, officials are implementing regulations with hopes they'll reduce the numbers of non-natives that infiltrate Lake Superior.

Local opposition to a proposed doubling in entrance fees at Crater Lake National Park apparently has worked.

Imagine taking the time to go into your backyard, or the nearby woods, or even a pond close to your home, to catalog all the life you found in it. Not just the deer or snakes or fish, but the birds and insects, reptiles, plants and fungi and everything else biological or botanic. Imagine how fascinating that would be. At Great Smoky Mountains National Park they've been working on just that, and what they've found has been incredible.
