"Pig War" Commemorated With Bronze Pig At San Juan Island National Historical Park

A small island, potatoes, and a dead pig nearly brought the United States and the British empire to war in the mid-18th century, and that's why San Juan Island National Historical Park has unveiled a bronze pig that stands with a potato in its mouth in front of the park's visitor center.

The ongoing use of lead shot and fishing tackle in the National Park System is a threat to human health, the environment, and non-game wildlife and should be banned, the Interior Department's assistant secretary for fish and wildlife and parks has been told by the Coalition to Protect America's National Parks.

Lassen Volcanic National Park Beginning Transition To Winter

Fall is dropping temperatures, and a dusting of snow, at Lassen Volcanic National Park in northern California, which means winter can't be too far off. Visitors should be prepared for changing conditions including below freezing nighttime temperatures, limited campsites and visitor services, and temporary effects of fire management activities.

UPDATE | Land Acquisition Adding 9,300+ Acres To Great Sand Dunes National Park And Preserve

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in Colorado grew by more than 9,300 acres Thursday via acquisition of land from the Medano Ranch owned by The Nature Conservancy, although the conservation group will continue to have use of the land for up to seven years, according to an Interior Department release.
