Ever get the itch to take a float through the colorful landscape of Utah's canyon country? Well, the folks at Holiday Expeditions are offering a 20 percent-off sale on select trips through Dinosaur National Monument and Canyonlands National Park.
If you're a fan of soaring sandstone ramparts, the high desert, or bucking rapids, and can talk nine friends into joining you, these might be good fits for you. Holiday, which has been operating on these rivers for decades, is offering the deals for parties of 10 on both its four- and five-day Yampa River trips through Dinosaur, its 4-day Green River trip through Dinosaur, and on its five-day trip on the Colorado River through Cataract Canyon in Canyonlands.
The regular rates for the Yampa trips are $940 and $845, per person, and they're being discounted to $752 and $676. The Green River trip through Lodore Canyon normally runs $845, but is being discounted to $676. The Cataract Canyon trip is dropping from $995 to $796.
Having floated the Yampa through Dinosaur last spring, I can attest to the grandeur of these river corridors. Though the Yampa flows through northwestern Colorado into northeastern Utah before melding with the Green River, the landscape is much more southern Utah -- big, towering sandstone monoliths fluted by the river. Main canyons dwarf boaters and swivel their heads around in awe. Side canyons harbor alcoves and pot holes bigger than hot tubs and hide patches of history. Grassy benches with box elders. Some perches of rock high above the river are dotted with potholes rich with cattails and other watery vegetation, anchor Ponderosa pines large enough they seem capable of snagging clouds, and feature curious geologic formations that baffle the imagination.
Days are spent both imitating whitewater cowboys and drifting/swimming through expansive pools and hiking side canyons. Evenings are spent recounting the day's events around campfires with new-found friends, tasty dinners, and the beverages of your choice. You fall to sleep to the murmuring river and awake to swallows and other birds.
