An Arizona man who had planned a five-day backpack through Sequoia National Park in California was being searched for Sunday by park crews after failing to come out of the park as planned the day before Thanksgiving.

Vince Scalise, 41, of Phoenix, entered the park on November 18, according to a park release. On Saturday he was reported overdue, and rangers started looking for him on foot on Sunday.

Mr. Scalise’s intended route of travel was reported up the Middle Fork Trailhead with plans to camp at Panther Creek through November 23, the release said.

The missing man was described as a caucasian with brown hair, brown eyes, and standing 5-foot-8 and weighing around 175 pounds. He was possibly wearing a baseball cap and Ray Ban sunglasses, the park reported, an carrying a forest green REI backpack with a grey tent.

The search area has experienced some inclement weather in recent days, with higher park elevations receiving snow. Overnight temperatures continue to be below freezing.
