A Washington state man who was reported overdue for a food resupply along the Pacific Crest Trail and was the subject of a search effort was simply running behind due to storms and is in good shape, according to Kings Canyon National Park staff.
Park staff said Sunday that Stephen McGuire, whose trail nickname is “Bible,” was last seen near Kearsarge Pass by another hiker who noted that the 67-year-old seemed tired and low on food. He was reported missing to the U.S. Forest Service on Wednesday, May 23. Mr. McGuire had not yet collected his next planned food resupply, located in Mammoth, California, a release from Kings Canyon said. His previous resupply would have lasted him until approximately May 22. While Mr. McGuire is an experienced hiker, he is not familiar with the area, and higher elevations in the Sierra Nevada had experienced winter storm conditions in recent days, the release added.
Late Monday park staff reported that Mr. McGuire had been located.
"Though he's tired, he's in good health. His progress along his route was delayed by winter storms. When contacted, he asked us to pass on his appreciation for the rescue efforts," the staff said in a post on the park's Facebook page.
