The Bright Angel Trail as it begins its descent from Grand Canyon Village into the canyon/NPS file

A 50-year-old Texas man, returning to the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park after a night spent at a campground halfway to the Colorado River, collapsed and died about 100 feet below the rim.

Heat wasn't mentioned Monday in the park's press release about the incident, but the unidentified man from San Angelo, Texas, died during a particularly hot day in the park, when temperatures were predicted to approach 110° Fahnrenheit.

According to the release, around 2 p.m. Sunday the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a report of an unresponsive hiker on the Bright Angel Trail, approximately 100 feet below the Bright Angel Trailhead. Bystanders initiated CPR as Xanterra Fire and Security and National Park Service medical personnel responded from the rim.

All attempts by bystanders, Xanterra and NPS personnel to resuscitate the individual were unsuccessful. The hiker was attempting to reach the rim following an overnight stay at Havasupai Gardens, which is almost 5 miles below the South Rim, the park release said.
