I didn't even know mumps and leprosy were in season.

I spent a summer re opining a trail because the nps had a horse riding contract to fufill.
so we cleared rockfall in a dangerous work site so that contract could be carried out and clients could get paid
tell me again what the nps does and why

These areas already have plenty of habitat and there is plenty of room for coexistence.

"Through the final rule, the United States fish 18 and wildlife service would devise management programs and special 19 regulations for the North American wolverine to help relieve landowner 20 and permittee concerns that reintroduction of the North American 21 wolverine in Colorado may result in restrictions on the use of private, 22 tribal, or public land"
Chris,
This is not about "shutting down" anything. Wolverines have no interest in interacting with people. As long as we do not shoot them, harass them, or destroy their habitat, they should be fine on these expansive public lands.
This is also not about "creating" habitat. These areas already have plenty of habitat and there is plenty of room for coexistence.

There is simply little room for such co existence. And I do not think for a second that any politician is acting in wildlifes or the publics interests.
On the issue of transparency, I am curious to the diveristy of your own board and senior staff. I ask, as its important to have a reflection of the commuities and landscapes that make up the park system. The fact of the matter is that there is a direct intersection to public lands and Indian Country--in fact, over 1/6 of public lands are directly within and/or adjacent to Indian Country.
This is so important to include rescued parrots from illegal pet trade in conservation programs! They did everything right in the rehab process! May this be an example for all the other parrot habitats where programs like this are taking place.
we are currently working in mexiko @psitamex
Thank you for your dedication. The traveler captures the Park System completely. I read it every day.

I applaud NPT's ongoing efforts, and must also recognize NPT's willingness to publish alternative and contrarian views on how to best preserve our national treasures. I believe that it makes a better, more informed, and more inclusive website.
Congrats!

Yippee! This is indeed great news! I've loved this site for years.
Yellowstone has done almost nothing to mitigate the conditions that led to the 1988 fire..
And I strongly suspect the worldwide die off of coral has a lot to do with Japan dumping nuclear waste into the ocean...
Even harsher treatment awaits those who report actual corruption, such as bribery, unreported leave by supervisors, faked project completion reports, padded visitation stats, and especially the widespread nepotism & cronyism in hiring. If I may ask this question again to Chris. please describe the exact lands you believe are being auctioned off. If you send a link, please make it relevant.

Federal and state lands. Jobs listed for not for profit and for profit groups to use taxpayer funds to hire workers- regardless of immigration status- to work o federal lands
If you actually read my comment and wanted to have a discussion I would not have to list links for you
what turned out to be fossilized human footprints
Any ideas or information about the process that transformed compressed footprints into fossils?

FYI:
The Sage Creek CG in Badllands NP is a treat. It's an open area, with tenting and spots for a smaller RV or pop-up. It has no electricity and no water, but decent vault toilets. I think it's still free.
The bison roam in and out of the area (yikes!), and you can climb the buttes for good views or personal encounters with the bison in the buttes.
It appears that the appropriate ruling has been decided, good. As for NPS, we all know that funding for the Service is controlled by Congress, and we all know how stingy funding is appropriated, or miss-appropriated.
Not publicly that I know of, James, and my guess is the park staff is working on a schedule. If we can find out we'll post it.

Kurt thanks for interrupting the latest news about Caneel Bay. Has the VINP announced a timeline for the cleanup of Caneel?

Uh folks, this is not exactly a good thing for the NPS.
Now, the NPS has to spend millions or billions either cleaning up the place or rebuilding it. It's a white elephant.
And the NPS is incompetant at cleaning up and rebuilding.

I considered this a frivilous lawsuit with no real legs. They should not be allowed an appeal
And?
The NPS slaughters Bison every year. The tribes slaugher Bison every year. Permited hunters slaughter bison every year...
Check out the "hunting" at Beattie Gulch. There is well documeted videos of these "hunts" slaughtering the herds point blank.
I don't have a problem with $30, IF I know how much goes to Booz Allen and it is de minimus.
Fat chance of that...

Chris…
Who does this benefit?
is the nps the de facto profit wing of booze Allen, microsoft, and Amazon cloud services?
this has been a takeover of us jobs and taxpayer money. For what? Higher fees?
My apologies for the term "regime." I feel these policies go back to Trump, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Reagan, etc...
this is just the latest and perhaps most impactful admin in regards to our public lands and access to therof.fThat said- since when has taxpayer backed federal land been considered on par with privatel held campsites?

Under FLREA, the recreational fees charged, or increases thereto, are discretionary, not mandatory:
SS 6802. Recreation fee authority (a) Authority of Secretary Beginning in fiscal year 2005 and thereafter, the Secretary may establish, modify, charge, and collect recreation fees at Federal recreational land
A. Johnson, it's not up to Biden. The Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act (FLREA) requires that recreational fees are appropriate to the benefits and services provided. Fees charged by the NPS must be comparable to fees charged by others in the local area for similar benefits and services.FLREA is 24 years old.

One way of achieving that goal is to collect and invest funds from camping fees into providing visitor services and maintaining facilities."
Another goal should be to use taxpayer funds WISELY. Having to repair/replace an HVAC system at Quarry VC that was brand new 10-15 years ago is criminal.

They go way back beyond the Biden administration.
Fee increases do go way back, but that's not the point.
The current regime boasts about taking care of the "little guy", getting rid of "junk fees", bringing down inflation, fightin' big corporations--you know, that whole "Scranton Joe" schtick.
Chris, fee hikes have been routine for the NPS for years. They go way back beyond the Biden administration. In fact, I believe legislation requires the NPS to adjust fees so as not to undercut private operations outside the parks. I don't necessarily agree with that, but that's another story.

The Biden regime continues its war on our public lands
In 2023, the United States exported about 10.15 million b/d of petroleum to 173 countries and 3 U.S. territories (American Samoa, Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands). Crude oil exports of about 4.06 million b/d accounted for 40% of total U.S. gross petroleum exports.
Apr 24th - 11:56am |

Chris, last year the US produced more oil and gas than any other country in Earth's history We are a petroleum exporting country.
First sentence: True
Second sentence: False. We still import a lotts crude.

Can you provide a comment of substance?
I have already posted the Strategic oil reserve is at drastically low levels... To keep gasoline costs low. Because the biden admin gutted domestic production on day one.
Many, many memorable U.S. national park dining experiences, but five immediately come to mind: 1. Several dinners at Jenny Lake Lodge in Grand Teton, 2. an amazing pork shank in the dining room at Grand Canyon Lodge (North Rim) with a view down into the Canyon, 3. several breakfasts at The Ahwahnee Dining Room in Yosemite, 4.
Reducing barriers to entry for these roles is not an "enlightened racist practice" - Paying a living wage and reflecting on why those from underrepresented groups might have harder issues securing these jobs only levels the playing field so the BEST QUALIFIED CANDIDATE can get the job.
I take visitors to Canyon de Chelly and overhead flights would seriously diminish their experience of the silence and beauty of this special place. It has been home to the Dine people for centuries and preventing such flights would be the respectful thing to do. Least of all it would affect my ability to bring visitors to the Canyon
And the profits for Booze allen, microsoft and Amazon which hosts the website on their platform continue
meanwhile the US taxpayer pays more, has less of an experience, and visits their public lands less..
Why is this allowed?
