Interior Secretary Says National Mall 4th Of July Celebration Will Be Military Salute

Jun 25th - 15:56pm | ecbuck

A celebration of our military is an "ego trip"?

Jun 25th - 13:51pm | Connie Burnett

Another ego trip.   Shame on him.

Jun 25th - 08:37am | tazzman

This is much ado about nothing. 4th celebrations happen every year in DC.

NRA Official Lands Seat On National Park Foundation Board

Jun 25th - 15:02pm | Mike Fritz

Susan Znidirka Schultz LaPierre is lying on her biography.  She was from Pewaukee, Wisconsin where her dad owned a small motel and she was a maid at the hotel. She was never an outdoors girl. Her mom died when she was in high school and she claimed her father was mentally abusive. She was born in 1961, not 1957.

Woman Fights Eviction from Rocky Mountain NP

Jun 25th - 14:38pm | m13cli@yahoo.com

Some family owners of lands which became national park in-holdings during periods of park expansion sold their properties too early with little thought to future values and their later life elder high health costs often without professional fiduciary lawyers acting on their behalf.  Their

Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument: Holding History In Your Hand

Jun 25th - 13:50pm | Doug Leen

I included this Monument on my recent NPS Centnnial tour and am glad I did.  I would encourage everyone to make this pilgrimage as it gives so much context to our pre-history.  And it was a pleasure to meet the very enthusiastic park staff.  Thanks for running this article.

Jun 23rd - 21:54pm | plainview

This park has long been on my bucket list.  Thanks for providing the additional impetus to make the 4 hour trip!

A Park Different: Isle Royale

Jun 25th - 13:15pm | JAMES LINNANE

Thank you. This was a great story. I've always wanted to visit Isle Royale but doubt that I'll ever be able to do so. This story is the next best thing.

Great article, has me longing for a return trip to this enchanted place.

UPDATED | David Vela, Once Nominated To Be National Park Service Director, Tabbed As Deputy Director

Jun 25th - 00:05am | Lois Bolin

Really appreciable your reply except the part about Trump. Those before you worked with a lot less. Shiftinbig your focus from blame to taking responsibility for proactive steps -such as getting excited about history again can only be good for your visitors & your spirits.

Jun 24th - 23:57pm | Lois Bolin

there seems to have been a sad trend at the Grand Canyon Park-15-year sexual harassment & hostile work environment for women. So a prime candidate is brought in to turn things around & she too has been forced out for basically the same reasons- that 12.5 yrs before Trump.

Rangers Kill Black Bear That Might Have Killed Man Poaching Ginseng In Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Jun 23rd - 21:36pm | Tom

The wildlife agency made a judgement call based on information it had at the time and I support their decision.  Regardless of what someone was doing, illegal or not, loss of his life is a tragedy. Lossing one bear to prudent judgement is not.  Black bears have been known to attack humans without provocation and eat them.

Woman Dies in Fall From Angel's Landing

Jun 23rd - 21:11pm | Jimmy G

I was there June 06, 2019. I was truly shocked at the lack of physical fitness of some hikers not to mention the lack of proper hiking footwear / gear that I witnessed hiking up the main trail let alone the top section of AL. I know my limits and did not do the last stretch.

Grand Teton National Park Foundation Focusing On Snake River

Jun 23rd - 11:55am | Joshua Israel

Great work with the boat ramps. On another front, why is there no talk about putting a state of the art fish ladder or fish bypass channel on Jackson Lake Dam. Assuredly, Yellowstone cutthroat populations can benefit from this.

Trains Hit And Kill Three Grizzlies Near Glacier National Park

Jun 23rd - 11:44am | Joshua Israel

Grainer Trains may have passed through earlier accidentally spilling grain along the tracks. Bears flock to grain like no tomorrow. Bears busy eating grain along tracks and then inadvertently hit by another train. This has happened in years past along Maria's Pass route.

just ignore what you don't like! Oh, he, like most liberals, is good at that, especially when what he doesn't like is true.  Thats why many of the folks here have to turn from discussing the issue to making personal attacks.

"After many years of reading and contributing to NPT, I finally gave up and rarely log on to the site because I had become so fed up with the constant trolling from one person."

Jun 22nd - 15:43pm | Mike Painter

I came back today after several months of seeking park information from other sources because there are no other sources that equal the quality and breadth provided by NPT only to find that he's still here and still trolling.

Jun 22nd - 14:07pm | Rick B.

Lee...   You've been missed. I have to agree with you on our Whack-a-mole contributer; he just hasn't chased me away yet with his self-centered and self appointed authority.    Sorry Kurt --- I keep falling for his piccadore behavior.

Jun 22nd - 10:36am | Owen Hoffman

i hope Kurt will continue to follow up. I hope the USGS glaciologist will be permitted to speak directly with Kurt. I wonder what the USGS and NPS are afraid he might say?

Jun 22nd - 10:14am | Lee Dalton

After many years of reading and contributing to NPT, I finally gave up and rarely log on to the site because I had become so fed up with the constant trolling from one person.

Zero Hedge is also seen as a source Doesn't alter the fact the NPS had to back off its 2020 prediction. And that's not something I "decided" it is something that happened.

"Never argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience." -- Mark Twain     Those who assume an Earth's Biosphere with No Humans    is  EQUAL TO  or  the SAME as an   Earth with nearly, 8,000,000,000 plus humans many of whom   are BURNING fossil fuels may be labeled an IDIOT !

Jun 22nd - 03:12am | Rick B.

Per Wiki ---  "Zero Hedge is also seen as a source of "cutting-edge news, rumors and gossip about the financial industry".Zero Hedge expanded into non-financial analysis, where its editorial has been labelled by The New Yorker as being associated with the alt-right, as well as being anti-establishment, conspiratorial, and showing a pro-Russian-bias."

Jun 22nd - 01:59am | Rick B.

You sure like those declarative proclamations of what is right and wrong. I'd guess you feel pretty darn good deciding what is accurate for the rest of us. Ego is a heady drug.

Jun 21st - 22:01pm | ecbuck

Another cut on the story: https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2019-06-10/glacier-national-park-quietly-...

Jun 21st - 21:29pm | John Grabowska

Excellent piece, Kurt, and a great example of old school, persistent, determined, shoe leather journalism...which makes it mystifying that you would allow an obvious climate crisis denier to hijack the comments with his consistently deflective and specious remarks. You clearly read and monitor the comments since you yourself are commenting.

Jun 21st - 15:06pm | ecbuck

Sorry Rick, changing what you call it doesn't change the facts.  The predictions based on the theory that man is the primary cause of climate change, including those regarding the Glaciers at Glacier National Park, have been wrong.

Jun 21st - 15:02pm | Rick B.

Again, it takes a real person to be able to acknowledge his own limitations, i.e., avoiding rocket science for pursuing profits sans conscience.

Jun 21st - 14:54pm | Walter

Totally agree. Well said.

Jun 21st - 14:30pm | rumpelstiltskin

This is getting ridiculous.  Bucky has co-opted us.  He now has us all arguing with a damned realtor, probably just an opionated MBA who couldn't  manage anything more aspirational than hawking resort property to trust fund dropouts and is now calling himself an "equity analyst" for crying out loud.

Jun 21st - 14:17pm | ecbuck

Sounds to me like the scientist that made the inaccurate forecasts in the first place are trying to cover their tracks.  Keep digging, let's find out who is actually putting up the firewall.  I seriously doubt it is some edict from the White House.

Jun 21st - 14:04pm | Kurt Repanshek

EC, I went through long accepted and established channels. Exactly what is going on with the glaciers and what it means was the focus of my inquiry.  maybe it supports climate change, maybe not, but preventing the experts from discussming what’s going on isn’t helpful. When did earth science become such a dangerous subject? Are the flat earthers returning?

Jun 21st - 13:53pm | Dan Blake

[I edited this comment for a typo after it appeared, which changed the time stamp and order in which it appeared. It was replying to ec buck, not Kurt--in case that wasn't clear!] You obviously have a different view of government than many people I know and work with. Part of being a government employee is dealing with the public.

Jun 21st - 13:51pm | ecbuck

you're overlooking/ignoring the longstanding role of the media to represent and report to the people.

Jun 21st - 13:50pm | Mike Painter

And to add to Kurt's comment, this is an attitude that previous administratins didn't have (though I'm sure some exceptions exist for certain individuals).

Jun 21st - 13:42pm | Kurt Repanshek

EC, you're overlooking/ignoring the longstanding role of the media to represent and report to the people. It would be ridiculous to have millions of folks seeking access to scientists in the land-management agencies. That's why the media exists.

Jun 21st - 13:24pm | ecbuck

Corporations have the same responsibilities to their shareholders (that is who they work for)  as the government has to its people.  Having every government employee talk willy-nilly to anyone that asks would lead to caos.

NPCA Concerned About "Strain" President's Fourth Of July Celebration Could Have On Park Service

Jun 22nd - 12:45pm | Rick B.

Breaking up immigrant families and failing to keep alive children that they take from their parents. Despite the positive effects. I'm not the one myopic.

Jun 22nd - 10:35am | ecbuck

Unfortunately Wild, TDS extends far beyond the NPCA.  Priorities across the board have shifted from getting things done to doing anything they can to thwart/attack Trump.  What they were for before they are now against.  Anything Trump does that was SOP in the past is now abhorent.  Anything he does that is different, despite the positive effects, is even worse.

Jun 22nd - 09:40am | wild places

NPCA seems more concerned with politics than they do the National Parks.

Jun 22nd - 08:09am | Lee Dalton

I don't understand.  Will this "celebration" be in addition to the one that has been traditional for many years or will it replace it? It sounds like it will be just one more of trump's Come Thou and Adore Me rallies trying to keep his fan base riled up.

"Unsupervised probation"?  How is that going to deter this hunting nut from doing more damage?  These guys deserved a much bigger fine and time in jail where they could sit and think about what they did.  Stupid b---ards.
