It seemed like every 30 minutes or so my phone would light up with a new warning that a great white shark had been spotted off the shore of Cape Cod National Seashore. It's possible that it was one shark moving up the coast, but nevertheless it was good to know that a shark was in the area.
Back in 2018 we wrote about the Sharktivity app that alerts you to sharks along Cape Cod, and we're back to say it's still a great app to have if you're heading to the national seashore.
Sharktivity lets you see shark activity around Cape Cod for the past two days, the past week, the past month, and the past year. Touch one of the shark icons (those white fins in the blue boxes) on the screen and you'll see information for the date and time the shark was spotted. You also can choose from a select number of named sharks -- Amy, Cool Beans, Flash, Hunter, Jack, Jenna, Luke, Miss Carolina, and some others -- to see if they're in the area.
From the app's menu you also can see the latest shark alerts and even report a sighting. Study the sightings and you'll discover that summer isn't the only season great whites head to the cape. This year's sightings so far included some from January and February
It's free and a great tool to help you understand what's lurking in the water just off shore.
