E. coli bacteria were found in the water supply on August 25, 2023 in the immediate area of Phantom Ranch at Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona. These bacteria can cause illness and are a particular concern for people with weakened immune systems.

As part of ongoing efforts required under the Endangered Species Act to monitor the population of grizzly bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, biologists with the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team (IGBST) will begin field captures on August 28 and continue through October 31, 2023.

A bat found outside of Arches National Park Visitor Center on August 18, 2023, has tested positive for rabies. In recent weeks, the park has received a few other reports of unusual bat behavior, including one reported bite.

Death Valley National Park is still closed due to major flash flood damage. The park had its rainiest day ever on August 20, 2023, receiving more rain than it normally does in an entire year.
