The US hosts two of the world’s most famous volcanic systems: Yellowstone and Hawaiʻi. These systems a well known for producing large volumes of magma through time and leaving chains of volcanic features in their wake, although they do so in very different ways.

On March 1, 2025, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area will begin construction to channelize the river mile -12 slough to prevent reproduction of small mouth bass in the Colorado River below Glen Canyon Dam in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area.

Sometimes, it takes a monumental event to spur Congress into establishing a national park. Such a significant event, or rather, series of events, occurred between 1914 and 1915 when Lassen Peak in northern California belched billowing black mushroom clouds of steam, ash, and hot rocks onto the landscape as far as 200 miles (322 kilometers) from the summit.

Even if you didn't visit it yourself, lakes near you in a national park may accumulate the sunscreen you slathered on.
