Progress Noted In Efforts To Rebuild Population Of Rare Swallowtail Butterfly Found At Biscayne National Park

It was just about a year ago that we told you of efforts to collect up to four individuals of an extremely rare butterfly found at Biscayne National Park. Now we're back with some good news: an egg gathered from that project has hatched, lending some slight hope that the numbers of the Schaus swallowtail can be bolstered.

Climbing ranger Nick Hall was struggling to control a rescue litter on an icy, 35-degree slope while being buffeted by the swirling downwash from a Chinook helicopter when he slipped and fell 2,400 feet down Mount Rainier to his death last June, a National Park Service investigation has found.
