Much like a homeowner who puts off "until next year" repairs to that leaky roof or well-aged furnace, Congress for years largely has turned a blind eye to growing maintenance issues around the National Park System. While two U.S. senators have introduced legislation to tackle that backlog, estimated at $12 billion, their bill alone won't get the job done.

A rockslide in Grand Canyon National Park has forced the closure of the Colorado River Trail between Pipe Creek and the Silver Bridge for trail repair starting Monday. The trail will be closed to foot traffic and stock use.

Campers hoping to find a site at Devils Postpile National Monument in California will need to look elsewhere this summer. Park officials say winter storm and flood damage and prioritization of trail repairs will require that the campground remain closed.
