Running with the big dogs means something in Denali National Park and Preserve, where Ranger Jess Toubman has been training her sled dogs in a park campground for the coming winter.

The National Park System grew by one unit Tuesday as President Obama used his powers under the Antiquities Act of 1906 to create Fort Monroe National Monument in Virginia. With that declaration the president preserved a site integral to the history of slavery, the Civil War, and the U.S. military.

While Joshua Tree National Park officials have abandoned efforts to revise their long-range General Management Plan, preferring instead to focus on specific issues, Blue Ridge Parkway officials are moving ahead with their own GMP.
