Aggressive Stallion Moved From Assateague Island National Seashore

A stallion that got too used to human handouts and became aggressive in his pursuit of them has been moved from Assateague Island National Seashore in Maryland to a wildlife sanctuary in Texas.

In this week’s show, we question whether national parks can serve as a barrier to slow the sixth mass extinction.

Certainly, the large landscape parks such as Yellowstone and Yosemite and Grand Canyon offer the habitat many species require. But parks are slowly being hemmed in by development, making it harder and harder for species to follow their natural paths across the landscape.

So can they slow the sixth mass extinction? We’re going to be taking a look at that in the coming weeks and months, and today we’ll lay out that proposal in an essay.

Assateague Island Habitat Restoration Project

Sometimes, when a national park is established it occupies land that previously might have been considered for another purpose. For instance, at Assateague Island National Seashore there was a plan to build nearly 6,000 homes on the land before the park was established. Today, park staff continues to work at restoring acres damaged by infrastructure related to that development.
