Cape Lookout Lighthouse Celebrates 160 Years With Free Climbs

One-hundred-and-sixty years after a bucket of whale oil was used to ignite the warning beacon of the Cape Lookout light, the National Park Service is celebrating that event by opening the lighthouse for free to all who want to climb to the top and take in the sweeping view.

Be Careful Where You Camp On The Outer Banks

It's been a rough start to fall at Cape Lookout National Seashore on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Ever since Hurricane Dorian sliced and diced the seashore's barrier islands it's been a tough place to get around, and to pitch a tent, as one camper discovered.

Dorian Tosses Up Two-Pound Fossilized Clam Shell Onto Cape Lookout National Seashore Beach

Hurricanes typically toss a great many seashells up onto the Outer Banks of North Carolina, but Dorian outdid most storms, tossing a 2-pound shell up onto Cape Lookout National Seashore's beaches. And that was just half of the entire shell.

Breaching Cape Lookout National Seashore

A wall of water, perhaps 9 feet high that was spawned by Hurricane Dorian, swept across the northern end of Cape Lookout National Seashore on North Carolina's Outer Banks, swamping historic Portsmouth Village and, overall, slicing up the seashore's barrier islands into islets.

Hurricane Dorian literally sliced up Cape Lookout National Seashore, creating more than 50 breaches in the park's barrier islands. At Western Carolina University, Professor Rob Young says the hurricane's damage was astonishing. How that damage will impact recreation on the seashore remains to be seen. Traveler also discusses this summer's uproar over glacial predictions at Glacier National Park, and invites a winter visit to Voyageurs National Park.

Cape Hatteras, Cape Lookout Largely Escape Dorian Unscathed

Cape Hatteras National Seashore and neighboring Cape Lookout National Seashore on North Carolina's Outer Banks largely escaped Hurricane Dorian unscathed, but surrounding infrastructure in some areas could take a while to repair for public use, according to Cape Hatteras Superintendent David Hallac.
