Washington Monument Tours Suspended Through Inauguration Out Of Security Concerns

The National Park Service, which drew criticism from the mayor of Washington, D.C., for how it handled permits for last week's events that led to a riot on the U.S. Capitol, on Monday announced it was suspending tours of the Washington Monument and might implement additional security measures leading up to and after President-elect Biden's inauguration on January 20.

On Friday, March 20, a day when normally most people would be at work, Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park was teeming with cars. Although a growing list of parks have closed in the face of coronavirus concerns, some national parks, including two popular spots in the mid-Atlantic region—Shenandoah and the National Mall—remain open to park visitors.

Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool Being Drained For Repairs, Cleaning

The National Park Service has begun draining the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C., so it can repair a broken water line that has affected the water quality of the pool this spring. While it is empty, the pool will also be cleaned. The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool should be refilled and operational again by the week of June 16.
