When you look at photos you’ve captured during a visit to a national park unit, do you notice one or more of your shots clearly showing a division of light and dark, or energy and calm, or two different colors, or two different textures? Contributing photographer Rebecca Latson sees this phenomenon in many of her own images, calling it the “yin and yang of a composition.” In this month's column, Rebecca provides examples of this yin-yang concept and how you can look for it in nature with your camera.

Seaweed and sea turtles aren't the only objects that wash ashore at Padre Island National Seashore, which is why it's good to have more than a few people lending their time to collect that which doesn't belong.

More than 11,000 sea turtles have been stunned, and an undetermined number killed, by the recent cold snap that plunged through Texas like an icy dagger. Biologists and wildlife technicians, including some from Padre Island National Seashore on the Gulf Coast, have been working to save as many as possible.
