It Is The (Almost) Perfect Campground

Seventy-five degrees at mid-day, no noticeable humidity, Northern flickers calling in the background in their seasonal courting ritual. And five deer, working on losing their winter coats, moseying past my campsite while I worked on this story. Add the breathtaking setting of the Black Hills, the vacant campsites surrounding me, and it’s hard not to argue that the Elk Mountain Campground at Wind Caves National Park is perfect.

Reduction In Wind Cave National Park's Bison Herd Benefits Other Herds

Wind Cave National Park recently conducted a capture and processing operation to reduce the size of the park’s bison herd by 131 animals. Partnering with wildlife managers in four states, these bison will be sent to establish conservation herds or augment existing herds managed by The Nature Conservancy, Arizona Game and Fish Department, and the Kalispel Tribe.

Cave Tours, Hikes, And Bird Walks Highlight Wind Cave’s Summer Ranger Programs

Rangers at Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota will be offering a variety of interpretive programs this summer. Thirty tours will be offered through the world’s sixth-longest cave each day beginning at 8:40 a.m., with the last tour entering the cave at 6 p.m. In addition, there will be tours of the Sanson Buffalo Jump and bird walks.

Nine Black-Footed Ferrets Released At Wind Cave National Park

Nine black-footed ferrets have new homes after being released at Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota. These ferrets, raised at the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service National Black-footed Ferret Conservation Center in northern Colorado, will augment the park’s estimated ferret population of 25 to 30 animals.
