U.S. Fish And Wildlife Service Moves To Delist Grizzly Bears In Yellowstone Region

A decision to lift Endangered Species Act protection from grizzly bears in the greater Yellowstone ecosystem came Thursday, just after a group held up the death of a well-known Yellowstone National Park grizzly as a warning regarding the fate of other grizzlies in the ecosystem if they are delisted.

Nearly 150 years later, Bradly J. Boner, a photojournalist based in Jackson Hole, spent four summers (2011-2014) retracing the steps of the 1871 Hayden Survey. He went on a personal “scavenger hunt” to find the exact location of every one of William Henry Jackson’s photographs based on the images themselves and descriptions published by members of the party, then “rephotographed” from each spot to show how the park had (or hadn’t) changed.

Standing on the rippled hillside of Checkerboard Mesa in Zion National Park, the sound came in waves as eastbound flight after eastbound flight from McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas passed overhead about every 10 minutes, adding to the cacophony of traffic from the park road 100 or so yards away.
