A wisp of smoke spotted by a backcountry lookout in Glacier National Park has blossomed into a nearly 2,000-acre wildfire burning in thick stands of timber on a rugged landscape that so far has precluded the use of ground crews to battle the flames.

A rugged landscape, ample fuels, and poor firefighting weather conditions are making it tough for crews to make much headway on the Reynolds Creek Fire in Glacier National Park, which continues to keep the Going-to-the-Sun Road closed from the St. Mary Campground on the park's eastern boundary to Logan Pass.

Containment On Reynolds Creek Fire At Glacier National Park Growing

Firefighters continue to make progress on the Reynolds Creek Fire at Glacier National Park. A cold front Monday brought higher humidity to the park, but erratic winds could be troublesome, according to the weather report. Thirty percent of the 3,237-acre was said to be contained Monday morning.

Progress Being Made On Glacier National Park Wildfire

Nearly 600 firefighters were battling the Reynolds Creek Fire in Glacier National Park on Sunday, with some progress being made. However, the Going-to-the-Sun Road on the eastern side of the park remained closed, as did some visitor facilities.

Gusting winds are challenging more than 300 firefighters as they try to get a hand on a wildfire in Glacier National Park that has closed roughly half of the Going-to-the-Sun Road and forced evacuations of a lodge and campground on the eastern side of the park.
