I'm kind of torn when something like this comes up. I understand that you have a national park. But then you have what's outside of a national park that is ostensibly governed differently. I live in an area with a lot of refineries. The Chevron Richmond refinery is clearly visible from parts of Rosie the Riveter WWII Home Front National Historical Park.

I cannot believe this could happen for the greed of money for the oil refinery. That is an absolutely beautiful park, and no one wants to see something like that when they are driving around, or enjoying the National Park, or have air pollution in it, when they travel to a National Park. Especially when they can build it somewhere else.
I like the Jackson Lake Lodge. I guess it's not so much in the rustic style that Underwood championed for national parks, but his history included adapting his styles, including several train stations in more of an Art Deco style.
I have vistited Valles Caldera and beleive the entire system should be protected for eternity. To have any one system exploited would be a loss to the state of NM and the nation.
It only takes one visit to understand why this area should never be touched by development and/or energy harvesting.

OPM is now backpedaling, saying the new premium policy will be delayed one pay period:
"It is unclear when the office changed the policy, or how the change was accomplished."
Furloughed employees got more empathy from OPM yesterday. WaPo is reporting they must pay their vision & dental premiums during the shutdown or lose those benefits.

I hope employees will remember this in 2020 and will remember that the Stupid In Chief also froze our pay increase besides stealing our pay from us with his Great Wall Obsession.
There are enough of us to make the difference needed in electoral college to get rid of this moron
It is a true sign of weakness to attempt to bluster and camouflage one's position as "representing all". It is a logical fallacy of collosal magnitude.
I know that I don't represent everyone in the world, or even everyone in one or another demographic groups that I may represent. I also know for a certainteed fact that any

I am a recently retired NPS employee who knows you should not and do not speak for the vast mapjority of NPS employees or even federal employees.

I am not impressed by the ad hoc "leadership" of the President, DOI and NPS. All of these attempts to hide the "shutdown" from the public just prolong the stupidity. The spending bills should have been passed and signed prior to September 30, 2018!

I speak for most government employees when I say that no single one of us speaks for most of us. Build a wall or don't, through a normal immigration and border security law making process, not unlawful hostage taking that disallows implementation of existing laws.

You DO NOT speak for most gov employees. Not everyone wants to pay for a wall and not every creditor is willing to go without payment. Grocery stores don't feed people for free. You are welcomed to share YOUR opinion but don't try to imply you speak for the masses, you speak for yourself only.

Have the Russians infiltrated Traveler, too?
Absolutely not, comrade. What would make you think we are bots doing the bidding of our overlord....I mean, the despicable, Putin?
too bad we're not allowed to look at our government email while on furlough to read his message.

Trump started this. He is a traitor to all furloughed workers and this country. He doesn't care about you, a wall or anything but himself. Just because I'm a "whiney Liberal" doesn't mean I'm wrong. Trump's impeachment and conviction can't come soon enough.

You speak for yourself and not the majority. Most of us blame Trump for this mess. Open up the government and stop holding us hostage !

Could be true believers like Parsons from the novel 1984. Totally unaware that they're merely pawns of the state, or in this case Trump.
Hold firm President Trump. I too work for the government and most federal employees support you. Just realize a lot of " Parkies" are whiney libs. We need the wall so dont give in to Pelosi. MAGA!!!

II second the comment above mine. My husband is itching to go back to work as SEVERAL of his sites are down and data is being missed. He would love to be at work and getting paid because, and I quote, he feels useless right now. My federal job is funded until September and I already have parents asking us what will happen if a bill doesn't pass. Please have empathy for those affected, not e
To Cat - excellent point. Thank you for that dose of common courtesy. It is far too easy to write ugly comments with few facts especially when you can remain anonymous. Recent events in DC prove that all too loudly.
I am familiar with the Eastern TN/KY area but am glad to learn fascinating history and current status of South Fork. If I were younger and still able to camp and enjoy those activities, I would head for those "hills".
Caneel is to special to leave it in ruins and they should wait out the lease to end followed by an open bid under strict use guidelines in keeping with what Rockefeller intended when he deeded the land to the parks service.
Hi Gerald - I think I can help you with your questions, a little bit. I've visited and photographed in Big Bend during the winter and the spring. For star photography, try Sotol Vista. It's my favorite spot, located along the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, past the Homer Wilson Ranch parking area. The turnoff will be to your left and you'll see a sign for the view area.

Planning a trip in early May, during the new moon. Where are some good locations for Milky Way photography. It needs to be near a road in a safe place, not planning on camping. Also what type of wild flower blooms can be expected in early May. Will probably stay in Terlinga.
Thanks

On it's face, I don't see how the callback of IRS employees to process tax refunds, or Treasury employees to perform verifications for mortgage loans, or DOI folks for processing drilling and logging leases & permits, can possibly meet the imminent threat to human life or property standard of the antideficiency act.

But if you look at the letter you provided in the hyperlink it only has two signatures, not the eleven signatures that the bottom of your article claims that it has.
I second the suggestion on the Makah Museum up on Neah Bay! You won't be able to photograph the exhibits, but the stories and the experience are stupendous. Also, you can hike out to the Ozette archaeological site where the majority of artifacts were unearthed, and you can shoot the eye popping rainforest along the way. Such a unique and gorgeous experience!!

You had a very good year of visiting these parks and capturing beautiful photos.
Thanks for all the marvelous photos and articles, Rebecca! I look forward to your Northwest-based artistry. Don't forget your umbrella and rubber boots ;o) If the shutdown limits your Olympic National Park access, check out these alternatives:

I worked through the 2013 shutdown. This just keeps getting worse and worse. Funding basic government operations should not be used to as extortion to get funding for a President's pet project. The way to get funding is to get the support of the majority of Congress. If you can't do that you need to either redouble your efforts with Congress or rethink the validity of your request.
Thank you Zack! I visited Big Bend NP for the first time a few days ago - what a truly amazing place. Your video's the essence of the park - keep the videos coming!
Brian - once again - 60% is required for funding bills in the Senate. The Republicans didn't have 60% in 2017-18 (or now) That is why the bill that had a 48/47 vote (with Pences tie breaker) didn't go to Trump's desk. Perhaps you have problems with numbers but if you don't have 60% you don't have control. BTW I don't watch/read Breitbart or Fox & Friends.
Here are some National Parks I don't get:
Pinnacles: This place is nice, but there are so many nicer places in Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Oregon, Washington, etc.......
Cuyahoga Valley: This is a cute park but really? Living over here there are plenty of parks that are provincial/state parks that are much better and offer more unique experiences.
