Water Shortage Forces Hotel Closures At Grand Canyon National Park

Aug 29th - 17:08pm | Kurt Repanshek

Not to be an apologist for the NPS, but they've been trying for years to get this pipeline replaced. Back in July 2017 they formally started the process. Not only is the paperwork gauntlet massive and complex (NEPA), but Congress has to provide the funding.

Grand Canyon:  One of our greatest nat'l parks is brought to its knees by inept inaction by the NPS.     SHAME on the NPS for letting this happen.   SHAME!

Aug 29th - 16:46pm | A. Johnson

Seems that would be the smart thing to do in the long run.   That's the core of the problem with the NPS.

Aug 29th - 09:44am | Ben Thompson

Just wondering. If the hotels and such right outside the park have water, why can't the South Rim tie into that municipal system? Seems that would be the smart thing to do in the long run.

Miccosukee Tribe Reaches Agreement With Everglades, Biscayne National Parks

Aug 29th - 16:56pm | Anonymous

The agreement also establishes the intent to collaborate on fisheries management, vegetation restoration, resource protection and facilitation of traditional tribal practices.     No.  The NPS should not be outsourcing its responsibilities to ANYONE  Period. DEI gone wrong.

Enthusiast Builds Website To Collect, Share Free National Park Maps

Aug 28th - 15:06pm | K from Japan

As others mention here, I am also one of them who are collecting the map issued by NPS, national parks, reserves, national monuments, river, recreational areas, etc. I am now making it habit to put a passport stamp as well (and on the Passport book, too). The first time I visited parks was back in 1991 or 92 - Grand Canyon and Yosemite.

Record $100 Million Grant To Benefit National Park Service Employees, Parks

Aug 28th - 14:16pm | Loui

Instead of a string of platitudes, how about we just rebuild some bridges, refresh some campsites and fund some research. I was unaware the NPF pres made $750K & underlings were making $250K-$300K.  No more contributions from me.  The Salvation Army CEO makes $1.

Aug 27th - 19:06pm | Albert R Gutierrez

Sounds like a lot of bogus woke agenda items---how about using the money to preserve more land area ???

Aug 27th - 17:47pm | Glad2bretired

Congrats to the National Park Foundation in realizing this grant, which if well-spent can really help the Parks.  I have some concerns about the NPF itself, which include a 2012 report by PEER, which accused this charity of wasteful overhead spending and a low percentage of its contributions supporting actual programs.  Under current CEO Will Safroth, the NPF is rated 4-star by Charity Navigato

Buffalo National River Seeks Comments For Development Of A Draft River Management Plan

Aug 28th - 08:32am | Girl from Parthenon

You stated,  "result of feedback from the local community, landowners, and river users who have expressed a desire to plan for increasing and changing use of this beloved recreation corridor." No landowner has expressed a desire to give up their land or change of use for this beloved corridor.  !!

Aug 27th - 10:53am | Ozark Girl

I hope this is not another ploy to take our farmland away in the river watershed area of Newton County.

Court Asked To Order Emergency Feed And Water For Cumberland Island Horses

Aug 27th - 22:39pm | Jenny

Feral horses - there are no native wild horses - do not belong on public lands. No more than feral hogs, feral cats do. And the romantic notion that these horses are happier than domesticated ones, absolutely not. They live short, painful lives without sufficient food or water or shelter.

Grand Jury Indicts Two Men For Allegedly Toppling Rock Formations At Lake Mead

Aug 27th - 18:46pm | Anonymous

Why?  Why did they do this.  What was their reasoning?

Aug 27th - 17:06pm | Anonymous

Oh, not so fast - or easy. 10 years will give them both ample time to fully understand and atone for their idiotic behavior.

Aug 27th - 16:03pm | WaltD

These individuals acted like teenagers.  No thought given to whether such antics might not be a good idea.  I'd give them a suspended prison sentence, a few thousand buck fine.  I'd also make them write out "I will behave in all my future visits to national parks" a thousand times.

Good news!

Support Growing To Rename Clingmans Dome At Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Aug 27th - 17:17pm | DC

I do not support these continual revisions to history in a misguided effort to make certain groups of people feel better about themselves. This perpetual cycle of lunacy will never end thanks to the sickness of political correctness. Leave Clingmans Dome alone and get over the fact that the past is the past and it is time to move on.

Studies Show Bear Spray More Effective Than Guns Against Grizzlies

https://above.nasa.gov/safety/documents/Bear/bearspray_vs_bullets.pdf#:~...

Aug 27th - 12:40pm | citations to be...

to date I've not seen convincingly comparable scholarly research that supports assertions that bear spray is more efficacious than fire arms when faced wih either predacious bears, bears (particularly grizzlies) that are defending a carcass or other important food resource, or instances when sow grizzles defend cubs.  What I have found is suspect data sets that include large numbers of reports

Photography In The National Parks: The Armchair Photography Guide To Bryce Canyon National Park – Part 1, Sunrise Point To Sunset Point

Aug 23rd - 16:26pm | Rebecca Latson

Hi there! Thanks for the kind words. A circular polarizer is one of those things all photographers should carry in their camera bags. That, and a graduated ND filter. The CPL will help reduce glare, add more color saturation, and, if there are clouds, add more texture to those clouds. Of course, it depends upon the angle of the sun.

Aug 22nd - 18:03pm | Beautiful photos

Just curious how much difference does a circular polarizer make. We are headed there in late September and would like to be prepared. Thanks and great work.

Arches Seeks Public Input On Floodplain Statement Of Findings For Delicate Arch Road

Ed Abbey:  Enjoy his writing, but jeez, what a terrible human being.

No.  Flooding occurred when the culverts under a road are not lathe enough to handle water flow in high flow years.  Smaller culverts are usually used to save money or lessen "environmental" impac.  New bridged roads are both more expensive and have a higher environmental impact than simply placing larger culvert.

The Art Of Blacksmithing At Fort Langley National Historic Site

Aug 22nd - 11:22am | Sean Dougan

The only thing stronger than the steel that Daniel Cram forges is his virtue. Fort Langley must be a wonderful place to visit and knowing Dan for so many years, it is no surprise that he is a highlight for so many that visit. I look forward to watching his presentation and sharing in his excitement when he looks at the crowd with his inspiring smile.

Mount Rainier Seeking Public Input On Timed-Entry Reservation Pilot Program

Aug 22nd - 00:14am | Stuiterbal

Thanks. During this summer, I visited this park for the first time. I had good experiences with the timed-entry reservation system and will provide feedback to the NPS

NPS Seeks An Operator For A Very Unusual National Park Lodge

Aug 21st - 10:49am | Sam

#1 the office where they sell shirts is condemned. Thats the "new" office. #2 the open air Pavillion is to keep the hikers from destroying the mountain as they all try to find space in a tiny area. When it rains guests will have random people coming into their cabins. These can be shared spaces between the lodge guests and folks that stay at the lean to shelter.

It's Dangerous Out There In The Parks

Aug 20th - 13:44pm | WaltD

There's the probability that the RV owners kept their rv fridge on with propane while driving.  NOT a safe thing to do.  Most experts agree thast there's almost no way for a fire or explosion when the main propane valve is turned off.  That said, I admit that in the past (my first year of RVing) I routinely kept my propane in the "on" position while enroute.  I never do that any more.

Grinding Away

Aug 20th - 13:35pm | OceanAdrian

I would like to know, for the houses most at risk, how long the owners have been there. I definitely sympathize with anyone who has been there, say, more than 10 years. Those people should get assisted buyouts and reasonable compensation. Those who bought recently, on the other hand, should have known better and probably did so hoping for a taxpayer funded bail out.

Another House Toppled By The Ocean At Cape Hatteras National Seashore

Aug 20th - 13:30pm | WaltD

May we presume that if the NPS is left holding the bag on cleaning up the debris, that it will bill be owner for the cost?

President Biden Creates Springfield 1908 Race Riot National Monument

Aug 19th - 17:15pm | Rick B.

I agree with this use of the Antiquities Act.      Speaking as a white man, who grew up more or less oblivious to the issues and injustices of race, this is an instance of helping people think about a lesser known instance of the inequities of our country.

Coffeepot Fire At Sequoia National Park Covers More Than 200 Acres

Aug 18th - 23:21pm | Sequoian

The Coffeepot Fire is now @ 700+ acres and at the meeting tonight in Three Rivers fire officials expect it to grow to around 5,000 acres and it won't be put out until rain falls. The smoke is wafting over in Sequoia NP, if you have backpacking plans, might want to rethink them.

Renowned Arch At Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Is No More

Aug 18th - 07:38am | Anonymous

We humans are so quick to assign blame to natural occurences, especially if it advances our political agenda. The party line that man has caused all things that are undesireable is taking credit for things far beyond our ability to control. Nature created this arch over a period of millions of years. Blowing sand piled up and eventually turned to stone.

Aug 14th - 13:55pm | Anonymous

We hastened it by damming the river, which raised the water levels to swamp its base.  It is true that all arches formed by nature will eventually fall, but putting water up against and under a sandstone arch is going to cause it to fail sooner.  Sandstone is only compressed sand, after all.

Aug 13th - 19:37pm | Anonymous

Hear hear!  Well said.  I went through the replies hoping that SOMEBODY had the brains to point out the obvious to the people who did not!

Aug 13th - 07:40am | 802Jeepster

One has to wonder, if the dam was never built to form this lake, would this natural wonder still exist today? Its dimise was sure to happen at somepoint, but did "we" hasten it in any way?

Aug 12th - 21:49pm | Lobo

Of course, all these formations were formed by erosion, and all are currently being slowly destroyed by erosion. Duh.

Padre Island National Seashore To Receive $7.1 Million To Restore Oil And Gas Well Sites

Aug 18th - 02:20am | Mike B.

So, once again, we taxpayers are on the hook to clean up the oil industry's messes.  I certainly hope future bond requirements will be more realistic.

House-Endorsed Amendment Would Block Any Wilderness Designation At Big Cypress

Aug 15th - 14:45pm | Carl

Isn't wilderness, via the Wilderness Act of 1964, the highest level of environmental protection afforded by Congress? It isn't clear to me how wilderness protection would impede environmental management. If this is true, then it seems the Wilderness Act needs to be amended.

House Funding Decisions For National Park Service Show Contradictions

Aug 14th - 16:00pm | Kurt Repanshek

I'm pretty sure they have, just haven't put my fingers on it yet...will post when/if I find it.

Aug 14th - 15:47pm | A. Johnson

Thank you for that information.   It would be interesting if the NPS has opposed anything coming from Congress more recently.

Aug 14th - 13:59pm | Kurt Repanshek

Between 1916 and 1932 the DOI and NPS opposed 20 of 35 national park proposals. And I'm pretty sure there have been more more recently.https://npshistory.com/publications/winks.htm#:~:text=Between%201916%20a...

Aug 14th - 13:47pm | A. Johnson

Are you referring to NPS's Community Assistance grants, as one example?  It largely funds non-federal groups and sites.   The Antiquities Act can only be used to protect FEDERAL properties--there's no requirement that this protection must be performed by the NPS.

Aug 14th - 13:36pm | A. Johnson

The choice is literally between sanity and pure INsanity.    No, it's not "literally" anything like that.  Literally, it's an election.  That's all.  How does holding an ELECTION constitute a threat to democracy?  You make no sense.   The upcoming election is going to be one of the most important in all of U.S. history.

Aug 13th - 07:52am | Lee Dalton

The upcoming election is going to be one of the most important in all of U.S. history. It's far more than just funding for our parks at stake here. The choice is literally between sanity and pure INsanity.  Between democracy and fascism. And if INsanity loses, he has promised a "bloodbath" and several extremist websites are already advising readers to stock up on ammo.

Aug 12th - 22:18pm | Mike B.

With the overcrowding in so many of our national parks, I would certainly not make such a rash statement as "no more parks."  Congress could prioritize parks funding over, say, beach nourishment projects that protect the mansions of rich people.

Wildfires Continue To Plague National Parks

Aug 14th - 11:31am | Sequoian

There are 8 lightning strike caused wildfires in the backcountry of Sequoia-Kings Canyon NP, with one of them being a little too close to Three Rivers-the Coffeepot Fire. This one started about 10 days ago and was of the sleeper type, and in ruggedly inaccessible terrain near the small Coffeepot Grove of Giant Sequoias.

Park Advocates: Time To Build Momentum For GAOA Reauthorization
