Acadia National Park Centennial Time Capsule Set For The Next Century

The mood was celebratory when members of the Acadia Centennial Task Force, Acadia National Park officials, staff and board members of Friends of Acadia, and staff of Bar Harbor Bank & Trust gathered to dedicate a time capsule intended to be opened in conjunction with Acadia’s bicentennial year in 2116.

While lawmakers in Utah were hoping the Trump administration would overturn the designation of Bears Ears National Monument in their state, no such move is expected against Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument in Maine, according to Lucas St. Clair.

Much of the new material for this month is focused on natural resources management and climate change. There are special sections for Wilderness Management White Papers, Lewis and Clark National Historical Park, and North Cascades National Park Complex. Overall, there are about 100 new documents posted this month.

A team of fire experts is assembling at Great Smoky Mountains National Park to conduct a review of the deadly Chimney Tops 2 fire that started in the park the day before Thanksgiving and blew up the following Monday to engulf Gatlinburg, Tennessee.
