Coastal National Park Units Preparing For Hurricane Isaias

Isaias, which was downgraded to a tropical storm Saturday but expected to regain hurricane strength, was bearing down on south Florida, and units of the National Park System from Everglades National Park north to Cape Hatteras National Seashore on the Outer Banks of North Carolina were boarding up and closing down.

Loggerhead Sea Turtle Run Over And Killed At Cape Hatteras National Seashore

A loggerhead sea turtle that came ashore at Cape Hatteras National Seashore to nest was found dead at dawn Monday, apparently run over by an off-road vehicle.

Loggerhead Turtle Nesting Has Begun At Cape Hatteras National Seashore

The first sea turtle nest of the season was discovered at Cape Hatteras National Seashore on May 16. Staff took this photo of the female nesting loggerhead using turtle-safe lighting. Red light is used because sea turtles are sensitive to white bright lights. The mother and nest were found north of Ramp 44 on Hatteras Island.

Man Ignores Rip Tide To Save Two Girls At Cape Hatteras National Seashore

Get caught in a rip tide and you're more than likely going to panic. The strong current of water pulling you out to sea can be overpowering. For a North Carolina man, the thought of two young children drowning due to a rip tide prompted him to ignore his own safety and swim out to save them.
