Point Reyes National Seashore Must Review Impact, Consider Removal Of Ranchers

The National Park Service must consider a future that doesn’t include beef and dairy cattle ranching at Point Reyes National Seashore and will conduct a public environmental review of how the those operations, some of which date to the 1800s, impact the park’s California coastline under a settlement agreement filed Wednesday with the U.S. Department of Justice.

Nearly four decades before the settlement of Jamestown, Englishman Francis Drake navigated the Pacific Coast of California. In his attempt to return to England, he careened his ship and established a temporary encampment while repairs to the ship were made. The designation of the Drakes Bay Historic and Archeological District at Point Reyes National Seashore recognizes the historic and archeological evidence identifying Drakes Bay as the most likely site of Francis Drake’s California Landing in 1579, signifying one of the earliest instances of European contact and interaction with the native peoples on the west coast, the Coast Miwok Indians.

Anti-Ranching Groups Seek Injunction Against National Park Service At Point Reyes National Seashore

The Resource Renewal Institute, Center for Biological Diversity and Western Watersheds Project filed for a preliminary injunction in federal court Friday to block the National Park Service from pursuing a ranching expansion and elk-removal plan until the agency updates the park’s “general management plan” and assesses the environmental impacts of commercial dairy and cattle grazing at Point Reyes National Seashore in California.

Ranchers Ask To Intervene In Lawsuit Over Cattle At Point Reyes National Seashore

Ten ranchers whose livelihoods are tied to grazing lands on Point Reyes National Seashore in California have asked to be allowed to intervene in a lawsuit seeking to force the National Park Service to conduct rigorous environmental impact studies on how cattle affect the seashore's natural resources.
