California Condors Again Are Soaring Over Some National Parks

Condors aren't the most glamorous birds in the sky. I mean, after all: they feast on dead animal carcasses. The California condor did not escape the scrutiny of Charles Darwin, who described them as, “....disgusting birds, with their bald, scarlet heads, formed to revel in putridity.” But, while their dining habitats can be distasteful, they are magnificent.

A National Park Classic: Hiking Zion's Narrows

We splash downstream in The Narrows of the North Fork of the Virgin River, deep in the backcountry of Utah’s Zion National Park, mostly craning our necks up like turkeys hypnotized by falling rain. But our fascination is not with rain, but red walls on both sides that rise hundreds of feet overhead. The sun does not find us in this deep canyon, where the air temperature approximates the inside of a refrigerator, and the ankle- to calf-deep water feels about the same.

Scofflaws Piloting Drones In The National Park System

How can someone spend anywhere from $500 to $3,000 for a drone, drive to the Marin Headlands portion of Golden Gate National Recreation Area, walk several hundred yards from the parking lot along with dozens of other visitors, commence to flying his drone on the trail to the Point Bonita Lighthouse, and claim not to know he was in a national park?

Official Numbers Point To 2014 As Record-Setting Year For National Park Attendance

2014 was a record-setting year for attendance in the National Park System, where nearly 293 million visitors spent time, a jump of more than 5 million from the record year of 1999, according to official figures. While most of the "name brand" parks were packed, there were still some sites in the system where you could find some solitude.
